Sofia Vergara, who played Gloria on Modern Family, candidly discusses her feelings about a revival. Created by Steve Levitan and writer Christopher Lloyd, the show premiered on ABC in 2009 and ran for 11 seasons. The cast included Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, and Rico Rodriguez, many of whom have met up offscreen since Modern Family ended in April 2020.

On a recent episode of The Tonight Show to promote her upcoming Netflix series Griselda, Vergara also touched on reviving Modern Family.

Vergara said that she felt it was too soon to bring back the show, pointing to how it ended less than five years ago. The four-time Emmy nominee also joked about her co-star O’Neill, who played Gloria’s husband Jay, saying:

“No, it’s only been four years. I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem right. I feel like we need a little bit more time. Well, we don’t have much time because Ed [O’Neill] is old.”

A Modern Family Reboot Is Unlikely (But There Was A Spinoff Attempt)

Levitan candidly addressed the possibility of bringing back Modern Family while discussing his short-lived Hulu comedy Reboot. The series creator stressed that he was grateful for the experience, but he indicated that the ABC hit had its time. Levitan struck a similar note to Vergara in that respect, underlining a reluctance to revisit the story. He has stated he was happy with how the series turned out.

Back in June 2020, ABC Entertainment’s president revealed that a spinoff of Modern Family had been discussed. It would center on Mitch (Ferguson) and Cam (Stonestreet), inspired by an idea from Levitan. The project stalled and, in the most recent update, is no longer moving forward. However, in June 2022, Ferguson confirmed that scripts exist for the Cam and Mitch spinoff.

Why Was Modern Family Canceled After Season 11?

After over a decade of success, the iconic ABC sitcom Modern Family came to an end with season 11 but it was for a good reason.

For the time being at least, it looks like the Modern Family spinoff isn’t a top priority for the cast, crew, and network executives. As both Vergara and Levitan indicate, there’s something to be said for leaving the series as it was and not rushing to recreate it out of some sense of nostalgia. That is especially true, given that a lot of reboots, remakes, and revivals tend to miss out on what made the original so special.

Modern Family is available to stream on Hulu and Peacock.
